Not everyone has a safe place to sleep tonight.

Poverty remains a reality. 25% of our community is considered impoverished. As housing costs rise and unexpected crises disrupt families, more individuals are finding themselves without stable shelter. Homelessness is no longer a distant issue. It is a public health challenge, an economic challenge, and a community challenge.

The Reality in Augusta

Each year, federally mandated Point-in-Time counts help measure homelessness in our region.

In 2024, 474 individuals were identified as homeless in the Augusta area.

In early 2025, that number more than doubled to 1,098 individuals.

The Numbers Tell a Story

Homelessness often follows unexpected change — job loss, illness, domestic instability, or rising rent.

These are families living in fear, chaos, and uncertainty — seeking safety, structure, and a path forward.

When asked to picture homelessness, many imagine a single individual panhandling on the street. The reality is more complex.

Nearly 70% of homeless women have experienced physical abuse. 40% have survived sexual violence. Almost half receive income in some capacity.

The Face of Homelessness

Nationally, roughly 24% of the homeless population is chronically homeless. In Augusta, that number has remained below 14% in recent counts — just 5% in 2025.

The majority of our neighbors facing homelessness are navigating sudden instability and are actively working toward stability when given structure and support.

The Center of Hope serves individuals and families who demonstrate commitment to rebuilding — attending casework appointments, seeking employment, and leveraging available resources.

Most of the people we serve are experiencing crisis, not chronic homelessness.

Who We Serve

Despite the tireless work of local agencies and volunteers, demand continues to outpace available space. We must expand our efforts — not just to manage homelessness, but to respond to it with unity and intention.

Between 69% and 75% of those experiencing homelessness locally are unsheltered — living on the streets, in vehicles, or in unsafe conditions.

More people are living outside than inside shelters.

This growth reflects neighbors facing job loss, unexpected medical events, domestic instability, and rising housing costs.

Standing Together - Restoring Hope

Standing Together – Restoring Hope represents:

  • A shared commitment among Augusta’s social service agencies, volunteers, and partners to create coordinated solutions.

  • An opportunity for donors to strengthen a community-of-care that provides effective, lasting support.

  • A renewed dedication from our faith community and local leaders to remove barriers and build pathways toward stability.

Our goal is clear: to create Augusta’s New Center of Hope — serving more people, more effectively, with greater lasting impact.

Homelessness may be complex, but progress begins with partnership.

Together, we can expand access to safe shelter, strengthen casework, and build a community where stability is possible.
